Casa Riccio

in Palermo

 the Casa Riccio's terrace

Casa Riccio was set up on the initiative of the family whose old dream has come true: “putting up guests who want to know the true side of Sicily and are interested in  cultural changes”. It is  located  in the city centre near  the Massimo and Politeama theatres and it is connected to the rest of the city by a good service of public transport.

Casa Riccio offers a comfortable and cheap stay if you want to go around Palermo and Sicily.

The bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning, TV and mini-bar. From the terrace you will enjoy one of the most delightful view of Palermo, admiring the Gulf of Palermo as far as Capo Zafferano, Monte Pellegrino, Mondello, Monreale. You can get  a  view of  all the city with the Cathedral,  the Massimo theatre etc. In the summertime you can enjoy a splendid view while  having breakfast.

A short account of Palermo

*  Palermo is synonymous of one of the most prestigious cities of the Mediterranean as well as the administrative centre of Sicily. It rises in a beautiful small bay on the northern coast of the island. The history of Palermo dates back to the 8th – 6th centuries a.C., during the age of the Fenici of Cartagena and was called Ziz (flower).  Throughout the several civil fights which broke out from age to age, Palermo was permanently annexed, along with Sicily, to the crown of Aragon.

*  One of the traditions people in the city of Palermo feel best is "the ancient myth of the blazes", which is announced along with the festivity of S.Giuseppe. All the inhabitants are engaged to accumulate old furniture, tables, objects and material of every kind in order to burn them in an only great fire, around which  boys and girls run and jump, singing and praising S.Giuseppe. This custom is connected with the cult of the sun: in fact, with the help of fire, harmful influences are driven away, greeting the arrival of the spring (the day coincides with the spring equinox) and wishing the city a new positive season.

Among the most evocative monuments that enrich the landscape, there is the majestic Cathedral and its Treasure which stores several works of art. The cappella Palatina, characterized by its  golden works and mosaics and the Catacombe dei Cappuccini with the Regional Archaeological Museum. The theatres Politeama Garibaldi and Massimo are among the best in the world.

The story of every district in Palermo is rich in mysteries. They are related to the Arabic - Norman - Byzantine - Turkish - Spanish dominations and all of them have a character that has remained in its inhabitants from age to age.
